In recent years, there has been a growing concern over Hemochromatosis, or Iron Overload Disease (IOD) in captive Lories and Lorikeets, as well as in Mynahs, Toucans, and other “Softbill” birds. Known in humans for some time, it has only recently been recognized in the affected birds. Effective human treatments and prevention are available, but they are all completely ineffective for birds.
Large-scale and in-depth clinical studies for birds have yet to be done, but the increasing importance of Lorikeets in aviculture and zoological settings must soon prompt some serious and timely studies in the higher academic and veterinary circles.
While much remains to be learned about IOD in birds, the strong general consensus is that Lory and Lorikeet diets should contain very minimal iron, no more than what would be naturally present in the natural ingredients used in a formula, and then as low as one can possibly get.

Rainbow Landing™ has recognized this from the very start, and has fully considered it in the design and formulation of our Lorikeet Nectar. Rainbow Landing™ Lorikeet Nectar has always been the lowest in iron of any commercially available lorikeet feed on the market today.
We do not rest there of course. We continue to closely monitor IOD and other avian health concerns, and will always work to be not just up-to-date in our formulations, but ahead of the curve. You can always count upon Rainbow Landing™ for the very best lorikeet nutrition available anywhere.
